Cheryl Stead

Watercolor of a writing desk beside a sunlit window

Cheryl Stead currently lives in rural Virginia after having spent most of her life in the Western US. She worked as a nurse before retiring from the profession in 2024. She enjoys kayaking and exploring when she’s not writing or painting.

Graceful Quill is a slow record of ordinary days along the rivers that feed the Chesapeake Bay — crab pots and kayaks, a hard move across the country, and the quiet, stubborn work of hope.

The essays here are devotional in the plainest sense: they pay attention. They follow a morning until it gives something up. If you have ever found the sacred hiding in a wet cage of blue crabs, you will feel at home.

New writing arrives when it is ready rather than on a schedule. You are welcome to wander the collected essays or say hello.
